Understanding Chandas (Sanskrit Metres)

What is Chandas?

Chandas (छन्दस्) refers to the systematic study of metres in Sanskrit poetry and Vedic hymns. It is one of the six Vedangas, or limbs of the Vedas, considered essential for the proper understanding and recitation of Vedic texts. Chandas deals with the patterns of long (guru) and short (laghu) syllables that create rhythm and musicality in verses.

Different metres have specific structures and are suited for different types of expression, from epic narratives to lyrical verses and profound philosophical statements.
